These terms govern your use of CoPay (“CoPay”, “we”, “us”), an app for splitting bills and collecting money with people you trust. By creating an account or using CoPay, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
CoPay lets a group of people split the cost of something and pay each other back through the app, instead of chasing each other over text or handling cash. There are two ways a group can work:
Card payments made through CoPay cannot be undone or refunded by us once they've gone through. If a group doesn't reach its target, or another member doesn't pay their share, that's a matter between the people in the group. CoPay is not able to reverse a completed payment or act as a mediator or refund service. Please only start or join a group with people you trust.
You sign in with a one-time code sent to your email, there's no password to manage. You're responsible for keeping access to that email address secure, and for any activity that happens under your account. You need to provide accurate details (including a phone number, which we use to link you to groups you're invited to and to identify you to other members) and keep them up to date.
You must be at least 18 years old to use CoPay.
Card payments are processed by a licensed third-party payment gateway, not by CoPay directly. We don't store your card details. If you organise a group and collect money, you'll need to add a bank account so payouts can reach you. Payouts depend on our payment processor and can be delayed or blocked (for example, if a bank account hasn't been added yet, or a payment is disputed).
A one-off (“Collect”) group has a service fee added on top of each person's share to cover card processing. It is shown on the payment screen and on your receipt before and after you pay, and the organiser still receives the full share amount. Recurring groups do not currently carry a fee. We'll give notice here if that changes.
You agree not to use CoPay to:
We may suspend or close accounts that we reasonably believe are being used this way, and may report suspected fraud to our payment processor or the relevant authorities.
If you believe a payment was made in error or without authorisation, contact us and we'll do what we reasonably can to help, including passing the dispute to our payment processor. Nothing in this section limits your rights as a consumer, or your right to raise a dispute with your bank or card issuer.
If you organise a group. When someone charges back a contribution to a group you organised, the card networks recover that money from CoPay, together with a fee, even though the contribution was paid out to you. You agree to repay us the disputed amount and any fee charged to us for it, within 7 days of us asking, and to give us the information we reasonably need to defend the dispute, such as what the money was for and what the group agreed.
Where you organise further groups, we may recover what you owe us by deducting it from money those groups collect before it is paid out to you, and we'll tell you when we do. We may also pause payouts to you while a dispute involving your group is open.
This applies to you as an organiser, collecting money from other people. It does not apply to you as a contributor paying your own share.
We collect the information needed to run the app: your name, email, phone number, the groups you're part of, and payment/payout details processed on our behalf by our payment gateway. We don't sell your information. Other members of a group you're in can see your name and payment status within that group, which is necessary for the app to work.
We try to keep CoPay reliable, but we don't guarantee the app or our payment processor will be available or error-free at all times. To the fullest extent permitted by law, CoPay isn't liable for losses arising from another group member not paying their share, from delays or failures caused by our payment processor, or from your own account being compromised through no fault of ours.
We may update these terms as the app changes, for example as new group modes or fees are introduced. We'll update the date at the top of this page when we do. Continuing to use CoPay after a change means you accept the updated terms.
